Library

Chestnut Hills, Toronto

The library is the only room in the home that remains from the original structure, and as such, it holds a special place in the hearts of the homeowners. Though the walls, flooring, and windows have been stripped and updated, the room still exudes a sense of comfort and familiarity, serving as a poignant reminder of the home's rich history. Inspired by a photograph, we collaborated closely with the millworkers to bring the design to life, ensuring that every detail was expertly crafted to meet the client's exact specifications. The result is a truly breathtaking space that is both beautiful and functional, providing the perfect setting for a range of activities, from quiet reading and contemplation to work meetings. In this room, the past and the present come together in perfect harmony, creating a space that is both evocative and forward-thinking.

Classic library, floor-to-ceiling millwork helps to create the illusion of higher ceilings. While the repurposed black walnut tree, which was sourced from the property, provides a natural element to the shelving. Throughout the space, brass fixtures add an element of timeless sophistication, lending the room a sense of warmth and elegance. To complete the space, we partnered with local Toronto artisans to create a custom library ladder, which serves as a striking centrepiece and provides a functional element to the room's overall design.

The custom moulding within the millwork is a testament to the attention to detail that went into the design of this library. The original fireplace from the 1900s, complete with a cast iron mantle, adds a touch of vintage charm to the room. The white oak hardwood flooring, arranged in a classic herringbone pattern, adds a sense of depth and texture to the space, further enhancing its beauty and sophistication. The library is open concept to the foyer and coffee station, providing an ideal location for remote or hybrid work, allowing for the perfect balance of productivity and relaxation. Together, these design elements come together to create a space that is both stylish and functional.
